Osteogenesis Imperfecta: Brittle Bone Disease

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a group of connective-tissue diseases characterized by abnormally brittle, easily fractured bones. A genetic disorder for which there is no known cure, OI is generally inherited but can also result from an individual mutation. Of the various forms of OI, Type II is the most severe. Topsy the Elephant is Executed by Electrocution (1903)

Topsy was a circus elephant at Coney Island's Luna Park. After killing three people—at least one of whom was mistreating her at the time—in as many years, she was deemed a threat and schedule to be put down. After hanging was deemed too cruel an execution method and ruled out, Thomas Edison suggested electrocution in an attempt to further his campaign to portray alternating current electricity as dangerous. US Pediatricians Support Tanning Ban for Minors

The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending that laws be enacted banning minors from going to tanning salons. Research indicates that people who start going to tanning salons before age 35 have a 75% increase in their chances of developing the deadliest type of skin cancer, melanoma. Members of the tanning industry say that the decision of whether or not to allow children to tan should be left to parents and not to the government. Proponents of the ban say that, as with cigarettes and alcohol, such legislation would protect youngsters from doing something that could be damaging to their health. More ... Discuss
